Exhibition: "Walls of Night Photography".

An ugly thing, like a storage fuel tank for the nearby powerplant in combination with ugly light of a natrium lamp. Seem to be from another planet at night. Now I use a tripod and a longer exposure time. A tripod sharpens the view, forms the last memory of the concept of the picture. Photo: Diemen (NL), 2009/03/15, 9.01pm
Exhibition: Gallery Streetscape 7 Dorpstraat Castricum NL. Opening Sunday October 14th, 4.00-6.00 pm. Opening hours Fri-Sun 2-5 pm. Exhibition runs until November 4th.

Exhibition: "Walls of Night Photography".

Walking at night on the almost deserted grounds of the Prater in Vienna. There is the technique of digital photography. One does not have to use a tripod or flash., which would only destroy the atmosphere of the situation. Photo: Vienna, 2018/04/27, 9.38pm.

Exhibition “Walls of Night Photography”

This photograph I shot in 1988. We are in Laugharne (Wales), for a long time the town where the poet Dylan Thomas lived. Reason for the picture was the poem “And Death Shall Have No Dominion”. I remember four minutes exposure time, walking around with a torch, and flashing the tombstone, which was not the one of DT. Yes boys and girls, using the reciprocity factor!

Exhibition Night Photography

There’s something strange about spots in the night. Everything that looks normal in daylight often becomes frightening, mysterious or magical in the dark.
Essentially the night is just a big black box in which all kinds of things exist. Things which are natural as well as things which are manmade. Sometimes these things become visible, mostly by artificial light. A feeling of disorientation arises. One knows there’s something out there, but it stays invisible. What’s waiting in the dark? In my pictures this atmosphere is captured. There’s also a distance from everyday life, calmness and concentration; moods which are often to be felt at night.

New Blurb book!

http://nl.blurb.com/books/7851346-into-some-nights

During the autumn of 2016 and the winter of 2017 photographer Jaap Bijsterbosch was giving some workshops at Gallery Streetscape in Castricum, a village in the Dutch province of North Holland. He was always travelling by an evening train from his domestic town of Diemen, a suburb of Amsterdam. Mostly arriving at Castricum station some 25 minutes before the start of the workshop, he took a small camera to capture the nightly atmosphere of Castricum. All photographs were taken between 6.45 and 7.15 pm.

March 12.

Cycling home I saw this abandoned night terrace. I fell in love with the three red balls, which functioned as some kind of a romantic illumination. By the way it was one of the finest days of the year until now. Amsterdam 7.40 pm.

Building sites at night, they fascinate me. Watch the plane stripes in the dark sky, a plane taking a bend during 10 seconds exposure time. Diemen, 9.17 pm.

At night by the Seaside.

Being at night by the seaside is a magical experience. It is alienating, strange. It feels a bit like being on another planet.

Vanwege Fragmentarische Aard (129) Because of a Fragmentic Nature (129)

Waiting for the last train home. Or did they miss it.

As I told before, just letters are to me miraculous signs. In itself they have no meaning, they just look odd. Amsterdam, 13/09/23, 10.25pm

From april 2013 till march 2014 I am going to exhibit a selection of Night Photographs in the exhibition spaces of the Amsterdam Hogeschool. A hogeschool is a kind of university.
Fervent followers of my blog may have seen these photos in the series Night & Silence.

Vanwege Fragmentarische Aard (88) (Because of a Fragmentic Nature (88))

One of the advantages of digital photography is the small size of the compact camera. So you can always take a device with you. And the acceptable technical quality still occurs as a small miracle to me. It allows me to see things, which were impossible to capture in the analogue era.
Needless to say that I used the stabilization device of the lens when I took the lower picture.

Nite & Silence -33

The photograph today is the last I took for my project 11/11, about which I posted a blog at November 7th. I also wrote that I wanted to make a book out of it. Well about 80 % of the book (layout, texts, selection of the photographs) is ready now. Yes, every November day I made a photograph. Thought about design & some words, and put it asap into the design program at my computer. Of course there have been many changes afterwards. There was one important rule : the photograph of the day had to be made at that very day!
Every day of November 2011 will get its own 2 pages, one (right) with the photo of the day and one (left) with a special design and words. The content has to something with the “soul” of November 2011. (Which was a strange November, hardly any storm or rain. In fact a bit dull, only the fog brought us some special days.)

Vanwege Fragmentarische Aard (82) (Because of a Fragmentic Nature (82))

If surrealism can be defined as a combination of several realities resulting into a new reality, photography is a perfect tool to create surrealism.

Zelfportretten # 139 & 140(Self-portraits # 139 & 140)

Making self portraits is acting in front of the camera. A slow dance in the dark between man and his own camera.

Zelfportret # 129 (selfportrait # 129)

This picture was made on the spot where the project of making self portraits started almost three years ago. I wanted to give the world something back after grabbing so many images from its surface.
Never thought that almost three years later, in the middle of the night, I would look like a coalminer.
