Wisp of City

To me it is an everlasting strange phenomenon in a city: So many human beings together who all walk in their own world. Such little attention for their surroundings that they didn't notice me as a long  photographer (over 6 ft). April 17 (or April 5)

There is new attraction in Amsterdam. Fountains which go off with an irregular interval. Exciting stuff for kids and passing photographers. Amsterdam. 15/04/05, 3.05 pm. 

February 26.

I had to kill some time at Utrecht Central Station, so I walked for a while around the shopping mall next to the station. I passed a traverse and looking through the windows at the underneath passing rush hour traffic I saw the beautiful combination of the red tail lights of the cars and the reflection of the shopping windows and the rushing people in the traverse. I love this magic, which becomes visible by the power of the one-eyed King, the photo camera. Utrecht, 6.50 pm.

February 14.

Just couldn't resist the temptation to play a little with big red signs and people on the elevator. Amsterdam 4.37 pm.

January 29.

Something in the expression at the face of the woman sitting in the waiting streetcar just struck me. Moreover I love the layered image caused by the reflections in the tram windows . Amsterdam, 2.22 pm.

Went to Antwerp for a day. Always a strange experience. It feels abroad for me, but I can use my own language. Beautiful light. As Usual, I felt very much at home in this city. Antwerp, Belgium 0.54 pm

Last summer our family spent some wonderful days in Vienna. It was a surprisingly interesting city. Very vivid. One of the most interesting spots was the 'Prater' a large permanent fancy fair. Here was one of the key scenes in the film “The 3^rd Man”, a good old time classic. Especially at night the atmosphere was some kind of fairy tale.

Other key scenes of this film were situated in the sewers. But I did not go there.

A shopping window is a favorite subject matter for me. I can play endlessly with reflections of street life, letter signs, poster in the window, clothes, mannequins and sometimes even real people put into just one single image, which has only existed on my camera sensor. Shopping windows. Experiments with putting the content of the shop, reflections of street life and sometimes signs of letters into one photographic frame.  An image that can only exist in my camera at just one particular moment. Photography can capture frame and time. Bit of Surrealism?

As you may know, as a photographer I’m fond to peep into shopping window and to combine fragments of posters, reflections, passers-by etcetera into the frame of one picture. To me this can result into photographs with a strong graphic design, which also contain some surreal tendencies.

Things that weren’t meant to come together do have an encounter in the picture. Only in just a recorded split second. The genius of photography.

It is a strange thing, the photographer and his camera. Of course, the device is just a tool. But some tools feel as if they just made for you. I had that feeling with my canon g11, I feel it again with my new Lumix DMC-GX7, a very fast compact system camera. Beautiful sensor with good deep colors. Beautiful lens too, 40mm 1.7. A camera that is made just for you in front of your eye, or your breast or hip, well it is a great experience of joy. Still that old rule still counts, 99,9 % of street photos you make is just bullshit, if you’re lucky you can just use a few of the rest.
