Greetings from Diemen NL #8

Greetings from Diemen NL #8

The Longest Night 11 years ago

(Often when I go out into my hometown Diemen, the somewhat sleepy suburb of Big City Amsterdam, I take my camera with me. I try to capture accidental beauty and sometimes unplanned alienation of the banal aspects of the everyday scenery. I started to do this from 2004, the year we came to live here,  at first in black and white, from 2006 in color.)

A.D. 2018 #28.

Sometimes a photograph has a small secret. By watching some time longer, the secret often seems to be solved. Although? After having landed in San Francisco during the afternoon, coming from Amsterdam, I took this picture during the afternoon. Some jetlag…. Photograph: 8/28, 9.37 pm. A.D. 2018 is a selection from photographs I made during 2018.

Exhibition: "Walls of Night Photography".

An ugly thing, like a storage fuel tank for the nearby powerplant in combination with ugly light of a natrium lamp. Seem to be from another planet at night. Now I use a tripod and a longer exposure time. A tripod sharpens the view, forms the last memory of the concept of the picture. Photo: Diemen (NL), 2009/03/15, 9.01pm
Exhibition: Gallery Streetscape 7 Dorpstraat Castricum NL. Opening Sunday October 14th, 4.00-6.00 pm. Opening hours Fri-Sun 2-5 pm. Exhibition runs until November 4th.

Exhibition: "Walls of Night Photography".

Walking at night on the almost deserted grounds of the Prater in Vienna. There is the technique of digital photography. One does not have to use a tripod or flash., which would only destroy the atmosphere of the situation. Photo: Vienna, 2018/04/27, 9.38pm.
Exhibition: Gallery Streetscape 7 Dorpstraat Castricum NL. Opening Sunday October 14th, 4.00-6.00 pm. Opening hours Fri-Sun 2-5 pm. Exhibition runs until November 4th.

Exhibition “Walls of Night Photography”

This photograph I shot in 1988. We are in Laugharne (Wales), for a long time the town where the poet Dylan Thomas lived. Reason for the picture was the poem “And Death Shall Have No Dominion”. I remember four minutes exposure time, walking around with a torch, and flashing the tombstone, which was not the one of DT. Yes boys and girls, using the reciprocity factor!

Exhibition Night Photography

There’s something strange about spots in the night. Everything that looks normal in daylight often becomes frightening, mysterious or magical in the dark.
Essentially the night is just a big black box in which all kinds of things exist. Things which are natural as well as things which are manmade. Sometimes these things become visible, mostly by artificial light. A feeling of disorientation arises. One knows there’s something out there, but it stays invisible. What’s waiting in the dark? In my pictures this atmosphere is captured. There’s also a distance from everyday life, calmness and concentration; moods which are often to be felt at night.

A Facebook Challence

I was invited for the following by Harrie. Of course I accepted
"Paul challenged me to take and post ONE B&W photo per day of my life for 7 days with NO people and NO theme and to challenge a different person to do the same. Jaap Bijsterbosch, how about you? Do you accept the challenge?"
On the 3rd day I wrote this: “This photo was made today, yesterday’s photo in this challenge yesterday, and the 1st photo the day before yesterday. No archive images!”

After the 7th day I wrote this: “For me this is the end of this challenge. It taught me again that I’m basically a color photographer. Although I am sometimes finishing off portraits and self-portraits in b and w. So, a portrait as my last one. Not a picture of a human being, but of a doll in a friend’s garden”.

New Blurb book!

http://nl.blurb.com/books/7851346-into-some-nights

During the autumn of 2016 and the winter of 2017 photographer Jaap Bijsterbosch was giving some workshops at Gallery Streetscape in Castricum, a village in the Dutch province of North Holland. He was always travelling by an evening train from his domestic town of Diemen, a suburb of Amsterdam. Mostly arriving at Castricum station some 25 minutes before the start of the workshop, he took a small camera to capture the nightly atmosphere of Castricum. All photographs were taken between 6.45 and 7.15 pm.

Nightbus in Dublin AD 2016.

Sitting upperdeck I noticed that the frontwindow of the bus partially worked as a huge mirror.

March 12.

Cycling home I saw this abandoned night terrace. I fell in love with the three red balls, which functioned as some kind of a romantic illumination. By the way it was one of the finest days of the year until now. Amsterdam 7.40 pm.

March 10.

Building sites at night, they fascinate me. Watch the plane stripes in the dark sky, a plane taking a bend during 10 seconds exposure time. Diemen, 9.17 pm.

February 12.

The night sometimes seems to keep many, many secrets. Diemen, 8.39 pm.

February 11.

Coming back from a late appointment I found the Amsterdam Central Station almost completely deserted. Creepy atmosphere. Amsterdam 10.42 pm.

At night by the Seaside.

Being at night by the seaside is a magical experience. It is alienating, strange. It feels a bit like being on another planet.

A plane is flying over. It´s almost like an ufo. CastricumaanZee. 14/10/9. 9.50 pm

Vanwege Fragmentarische Aard (136) Because of a Fragmentary Nature (136)

Sometimes I’m sitting in a bus, being very glad that Canon made its s90 camera and that it is in my pocket.
