There is new attraction in Amsterdam. Fountains which go off with an irregular interval. Exciting stuff for kids and passing photographers. Amsterdam. 15/04/05, 3.05 pm. 

February 26.

I had to kill some time at Utrecht Central Station, so I walked for a while around the shopping mall next to the station. I passed a traverse and looking through the windows at the underneath passing rush hour traffic I saw the beautiful combination of the red tail lights of the cars and the reflection of the shopping windows and the rushing people in the traverse. I love this magic, which becomes visible by the power of the one-eyed King, the photo camera. Utrecht, 6.50 pm.

February 14.

Just couldn't resist the temptation to play a little with big red signs and people on the elevator. Amsterdam 4.37 pm.

January 16

Went to Antwerp for a day. Always a strange experience. It feels abroad for me, but I can use my own language. Beautiful light. As Usual, I felt very much at home in this city. Antwerp, Belgium 0.54 pm

Some time ago I went to Antwerp for a day. Mainly to watch and capture reflections in shopping windows and mirrors. As you may well know I love to mingle the world before and behind the window. The photo camera is a beautiful device to use for this play: It glues the two 3D realities into one 2D photographic reality. A slightly surreal image is often the result.

It is a strange phenomena in shopping areas. Shopping windows often show signs and letters instead of beautiful articles. And sometimes visitors of restaurants are eating in the shopping window.

Yes!  I love to use reflections in my photographs. They offer the opportunity to combine two worlds into one image. Today the image underneath is an example of Shopping Window City Blues.

Reflections, for instance in shopping windows or train windows, when the train is riding through a tunnel, can be a powerful tool to create strange images.  One can combine two worlds that in reality are different ones into just one image. This results into an image which is in fact impossible. We don’t see it, because we look at the world with two eyes. This allows us to perceive depth. The camera can’t do it, it has only one lens.

This is the reason I often look at shopping windows with one eye closed.
