From The Archives

Some 35 years I took the above photograph. A man trying to reach the dry part of the beach by making a huge jump. He’s now forever floating above the edge of the sea. Sorting out my archive of negatives I found this flying man. I digitalize a selection from my archives. It is quite a job. One starts to realize that one made a lot of rubbish. But sometimes a hidden treasure is to be found. Often it is a feast of remembrance.

New Exhibition!

Seaward at Night. Castricum on the Sea.

There’s something strange about spots in the night. Everything that looks normal in daylight often becomes frightening, mysterious or magical in the dark.

Essentially the night is just a big black box in which all kinds of things exist. Things which are natural as well as things which are man made. Sometimes these things become visible, mostly by artificial light. A feeling of disorientation arises. One knows there’s something out there, but it stays invisible. What’s waiting in the dark? In my pictures this atmosphere is captured. There’s also a distance from everyday life, calmness and concentration; moods which are often to be felt at night.

The secret of the night is revealed from the parking lot onto the beach!

It may look like Hawaii on a quiet day, but the picture was taken at the Dutch bathing resort Zandvoort on a rather windy day. Zandvoort, 15/4/24, 2.58 pm.

This was the only way today to capture the calmness of the sea today. There was a very fragile silence. Castricum aan Zee, 1.17 pm.

At night by the Seaside.

Being at night by the seaside is a magical experience. It is alienating, strange. It feels a bit like being on another planet.

It’s something I’m doing for a long time: To investigate the power of the minimal in the  photographic images. In other words: How much does a photographer need to capture to tell a coherent story.

Het was gisteren heet in de stad. Keihard licht, geen wind waardoor de uitlaatgassen tussen de gebouwen bleven hangen. Benauwend. Daarom ging nog een keer naar Coney Island. Daar was het frisjes en het strand was vrijwel uitgestorven. Beetje desolaat sfeertje.

Vanwege Fragmentarische Aard (57)

’t Is een beetje een kleine afbeelding, maar klik hier om de foto te zien die Robert Frank in 1958 op Coney Island maakte. Het doet je dan nogal wat om 53 jaar later op zo’n beetje dezelfde plek een foto te maken. Let op het lullige namaak palmboompje. Dat was er niet in Frank zijn tijd.

“Bezoekers van de Belgische kust mogen voorlopig niet in zee zwemmen, omdat de reddingsposten nog niet bemand zijn. Dat is in de meeste badplaatsen pas half juni het geval.”

Werken aan een boek betekent ook vervelende keuzes maken. Deze foto is me dierbaar omdar de 2 figuurtjes precies op de goede plek staan en de sfeer op de foto zo mooi melancholiek is. Maar ik krijg hem niet goed geplaatst in het boek. Dus gebruik ik hem niet.

Van voorbijgaande aard (42)

Afgelopen zaterdag naar de opening van de tentoonstelling “Scheveningen 1955-1956” van Jaques Meijer geweest. Prachtig tijdsbeeld, en hoe zijn Scheveningen én de fotografie veranderd!

Van Voorbijgaande Aard.(2)

Afgelopen vrijdag was ik in Almelo. Op precies dezelfde plek als 2 jaar geleden kwam een vrachtauto voorrijden met weer zo'n grote afbeelding van een vrouw in lingerie als op de onderste foto in de post van 4 maart.

Romantisch!

Nadat ik in de zomer van 1984 samen met Rob Ferençik op fotoreis in Groot-Brittannië ging, werd het in 1985 een soloreis. Eigen beheer, dus een laag budget. Achteraf bezien, tja wat maakte ik romantische foto's.
De lokatie is bij PortMeiron een geheel in Italiaanse stijl opgetrokken kustdorp in Wales. Een project van een totaal op Italië verliefde Lord.

Uit de oude doos.

Onderstaande foto nam ik op een frisse zondagmorgen in mei. Na weken nattigheid scheen eindelijk de zon. Door het hoge vochtpercentage in de lucht kreeg je prachtige condensstrepen van de vliegtuigen. Roodfilter en door mijn knieën, toen er een hele groep trimmers aankwam.
Jaren later won dit beeld een prijs in een wedstrijd van het American Book Center in Amsterdam ter gelegenheid van hun 30-jarig bestaan. Van de 12 prijswinnende foto's werd een kalender gemaakt.
