1 of the things I did during this year (& during
the last 2 months of 2017) was taking a photo between the two slopes of the
freeways A1 and A9, a piece of ground between a motorway junction where only
grass is growing. And some wild flowers. Every 2-3 weeks I went to 52.332323 °
North latitude, 5.004553 ° East longitude
and stood on the same corner stone. At YouTube https://youtu.be/o3nNk9jIKFE you can watch a test series. In January I am planning to
make a “Bijsterboekje” (Bijsterbooklet). Photographs: 52.332323
° North latitude, 5.004553 ° East longitude, 4/18, 5.37 pm and 52.332323 °

Diemen is
the Amsterdam suburb where our family lives for quite a few years now. In
Diemen one can find the only one level railway crossing in the Amsterdam region.
Source of irritation with about twenty trains every hour. But sometimes in the long
afternoon light of December a railway crossing is just beautiful. And the
photographer is doing some errands and has as always, a camera with him. Photograph:

An ugly
thing, like a storage fuel tank for the nearby powerplant in combination with
ugly light of a natrium lamp. Seem to be from another planet at night. Now I use

Exhibition “Walls of Night Photography”
This photograph
I shot in 1988. We are in Laugharne (Wales), for a long time the town where the
poet Dylan Thomas lived. Reason for the picture was the poem “And Death Shall
Have No Dominion”. I remember four minutes exposure time, walking around with a
torch, and flashing the tombstone, which was not the one of DT. Yes boys and
girls, using the reciprocity factor!

Exhibition Night Photography
There’s something strange about spots in the night.
Everything that looks normal in daylight often becomes frightening, mysterious
or magical in the dark.
Essentially the night is just a big black box in which
all kinds of things exist. Things which are natural as well as things which are
manmade. Sometimes these things become visible, mostly by artificial light. A
feeling of disorientation arises. One knows there’s something out there, but it
stays invisible. What’s waiting in the dark? In my pictures this atmosphere is
captured. There’s also a distance from everyday life, calmness and
concentration; moods which are often to be felt at night.

Castricum NL. Opening Sunday October 14th, 4.00-6.00 pm. Opening hours Fri-Sun
2-5 pm. Exhibition runs until November 4th)

From The Archives
Some 35
years I took the above photograph. A man trying to reach the dry part of the
beach by making a huge jump. He’s now forever floating above the edge of the
sea. Sorting out my archive of negatives I found this flying man. I digitalize a
selection from my archives. It is quite a job. One starts to realize that one made a lot of
rubbish. But sometimes a hidden treasure is to be found. Often it is a feast of
remembrance.

A sign
of a advertisement lightning sometimes turns out to be an icon for my
photography. As a young boy of 5-6 years old I was always gazing at boxes with “Trix-Express”
trains in the shopping windows of “Galeries Modernes” at the Vismarkt (Fish
Market) in Groningen (NL). Turning around at the hand of my father I saw that
huge sign at the opposite of the square. It was for the assurance company RVS.
It consisted of a man with a walking pointing at the letters RVS, a small dog
and a woman with a black umbrella. That umbrella impressed me very much. Some
30 years later I shoot a series “Umbrellas in the streets of Amsterdam”. Until
today I often find umbrellas at my photographic path. Up: This was the advertisement
sign, at the top of the walking stick one could see the letters RVS. Middle:

Some time ago
I was at the opening of the exhibition of AndrƩ Kertesz in the Foam museum in
Amsterdam. To me Kertesz is the master of very functional form and very functional
compositions. Often, he is also a very gifted player with surreal and
surrealistic elements in his images. I could not resist to take a photo in his
style. I used some elements from a big print of his photograph. His photographs
have a bigger impact if they are printed rather small. The small prints were
beautifully printed. If you are in Amsterdam, go and see this exhibition.
