Walking in the rain

Photo from my show "Shop window in the Shop window".

Invitation!!

Meet & Greet the photographer! Friday, April 8 from 4 to 6 pm! Welcome!

Exhibition!!

Photos!!

“Shop window in the Shop window”

When: March 17, 2022 to April 25, 2022.

Where: Raamgalerie Filmstudio Franjo, 2-e van der Helststraat 41, 1073 AH Amsterdam

Open: Daily, 9am to 11pm.

Fashion stores, jewelers, bakers, McDonalds, travel agencies, garages, museums, galleries, souvenir shops, department stores, hotels and much more. Photographer Jaap Bijsterbosch walks by and always looks at the shop window through the viewfinder of his camera. He sometimes registers the content or message of the shop window, but also often the interplay between the shop window and the environment in which the shop window is located. Through the single lens of the camera, the street scene reflected in the shop window can be combined with the contents of the shop window to create alienating images, often with a poetic or surreal slant. Bijsterbosch also has no objection whatsoever to giving his own reflection in the window pane an important role as a (determining) element.

Greetings from Diemen NL #2

Often when I go out into my hometown Diemen, the somewhat sleepy suburb of Big City Amsterdam, I take my camera with me. I try to capture accidental beauty and sometimes unplanned alienation of the banal aspects of the everyday scenery. I started to do this from 2004, the year we came to live here,  at first in black and white, from 2006 in color.

Travel Photo(s) ##4.

The Irish call the last Sunday in July “Reek Sunday”. The Reek is the nick name for Croagh Patrick, a mountain of 764 meters high in the west of Ireland. The last Sunday of July thousands of Irish are climbing to the top to celebrate that in the year 441 St. Patrick climbed the mountain and prayed for the blessing of Ireland. In 1990 I joined. It was a rainy day. My lens got wet. It looked a bit like Fellini in Ireland. The last photo today was made on the same spot as the one yesterday. All photos were shot at 07/29/1990.

Follow the Icon (4)

A sign of a advertisement lightning sometimes turns out to be an icon for my photography. As a young boy of 5-6 years old I was always gazing at boxes with “Trix-Express” trains in the shopping windows of “Galeries Modernes” at the Vismarkt (Fish Market) in Groningen (NL). Turning around at the hand of my father I saw that huge sign at the opposite of the square. It was for the assurance company RVS. It consisted of a man with a walking pointing at the letters RVS, a small dog and a woman with a black umbrella. That umbrella impressed me very much. Some 30 years later I shoot a series “Umbrellas in the streets of Amsterdam”. Until today I often find umbrellas at my photographic path. Up: This was the advertisement sign, at the top of the walking stick one could see the letters RVS. Middle: Amsterdam, April 1984. Under Amsterdam: 2017/12/10, 5.06 pm.

Irish notes (6)

Sometimes it was raining cats and dogs. Sometimes I walked long enough and my feet were tired (good shoes are essential for a photographer!). On top of a bus is a wonderful spot to get another perspective of street life. Up: Dublin 15/9/13 1.47 pm. Middle: Dublin 13/7/19 4.20 pm. Under: Dublin 17/8/27 5.19 pm.

February 20.

In less than a month there will be elections for the 12 provincial parliaments. One cannot say it arouses great enthusiasm in the country. Diemen, 10.56 am.

January 26.

This was happening to me today: walking along the small canal, in the gray light of the drizzle, I suddenly felt myself in the 19th century. Amsterdam, 1.27 pm.

On the move again

I love to sit in a train watching the world go by. The combination of movement & light & the reflection of the train interior in the compartment window sometimes results in strange, alienating, almost surreal photographs.

Zelfportret # 169-172 (Self portrait # 169-172)

I can’t help it. Just have to make self portraits. Sometimes I see a ugly Belgian prison wall, sometimes I see some raindrops on a window. Sometimes flowers.
And then, before I really know what I am doing, I grab a camera and…
Is it a kind of disease?

Vanwege Fragmentarische Aard (101) (Because of a Fragmentic Nature (101)

When it’s raining the photographer can use an umbrella to protect his camera and himself (in that order). People use a lot of umbrellas when the rain falls down.
I love to use umbrellas as an strange photographic object.
I already did that when I started my photographic career. The upper picture I made in 1983, working for the Amsterdam Arts Council on a project called “Umbrella Weather”.
The image underneath I made 2 days ago strolling around in Brussels. Because I am pretty tall, I can look from above at many umbrellas. Nowadays they have the most fantastic colors and designs.
Up: Amsterdam. Museumplein. 1983.

Rain & shop window Light , especially in the twilight hour, can cause fairytale reflections on dull cobble stones. The red umbrella was a small present of the God of Time.
