Regarding Iron Lines/ Omtrent IJzeren Lijnen

This is one of the many photos I took and will take in a train compartment. From 19/01 2024 to 17/02 2024 I will show photos out of the magic world of train travel, railway lines, passengers and stations in the exhibition "Regarding Iron Lines" in Gallery WM in Amsterdam. A photographic show of analogue black and white vintage prints from the 90s of the previous century as well as digital color prints from 2023.

March 6.

I find myself in the last carriage of the train to Antwerp, where I am going to visit a friend. I am rediscovering the square format. Moerdijkbrug, 11.27 am

Treincupé (Train compartment)

The other day there was an article in a Dutch newspaper about the increasing popularity of travelling by car amongst people under 40. One of the explanations was the fact that they could use the internet (Wifi!) and listen to music more intensely when travelling by train. As a regular train traveler I like that. As a photographer too, because it can cause nice pictures.

Vanwege Fragmentarische Aard (118) Because of a Fragmentic Nature (118)

Reflections, for instance in shopping windows or train windows, when the train is riding through a tunnel, can be a powerful tool to create strange images.  One can combine two worlds that in reality are different ones into just one image. This results into an image which is in fact impossible. We don’t see it, because we look at the world with two eyes. This allows us to perceive depth. The camera can’t do it, it has only one lens.
This is the reason I often look at shopping windows with one eye closed.

Vanwege Fragmentarische Aard (114) (Because of a Fragmentic Nature (114)

Tomorrow I will spend some time at the main station of Antwerp. To me it is one of the most beautiful stations I know. A perfect mix between a modern underground part and an impressive romantic upper part.
All photographs were taken at June 26th of this year.
