 “Shop window in the Shop window”

When: March 17, 2022 to April 25, 2022.

Where: Raamgalerie Filmstudio Franjo, 2-e van der Helststraat 41, 1073 AH Amsterdam

Open: Daily, 9am to 11pm.

Fashion stores, jewelers, bakers, McDonalds, travel agencies, garages, museums, galleries, souvenir shops, department stores, hotels and much more. Photographer Jaap Bijsterbosch walks by and always looks at the shop window through the viewfinder of his camera. He sometimes registers the content or message of the shop window, but also often the interplay between the shop window and the environment in which the shop window is located. Through the single lens of the camera, the street scene reflected in the shop window can be combined with the contents of the shop window to create alienating images, often with a poetic or surreal slant. Bijsterbosch also has no objection whatsoever to giving his own reflection in the window pane an important role as a (determining) element.

 

Follow the Icon (4)

A sign of a advertisement lightning sometimes turns out to be an icon for my photography. As a young boy of 5-6 years old I was always gazing at boxes with “Trix-Express” trains in the shopping windows of “Galeries Modernes” at the Vismarkt (Fish Market) in Groningen (NL). Turning around at the hand of my father I saw that huge sign at the opposite of the square. It was for the assurance company RVS. It consisted of a man with a walking pointing at the letters RVS, a small dog and a woman with a black umbrella. That umbrella impressed me very much. Some 30 years later I shoot a series “Umbrellas in the streets of Amsterdam”. Until today I often find umbrellas at my photographic path. Up: This was the advertisement sign, at the top of the walking stick one could see the letters RVS. Middle: Amsterdam, April 1984. Under Amsterdam: 2017/12/10, 5.06 pm.

Vanwege Fragmentarische Aard (101) (Because of a Fragmentic Nature (101)

When it’s raining the photographer can use an umbrella to protect his camera and himself (in that order). People use a lot of umbrellas when the rain falls down.
I love to use umbrellas as an strange photographic object.
I already did that when I started my photographic career. The upper picture I made in 1983, working for the Amsterdam Arts Council on a project called “Umbrella Weather”.
The image underneath I made 2 days ago strolling around in Brussels. Because I am pretty tall, I can look from above at many umbrellas. Nowadays they have the most fantastic colors and designs.

Rain & shop window Light , especially in the twilight hour, can cause fairytale reflections on dull cobble stones. The red umbrella was a small present of the God of Time.

Het maakt niet uit of het reclame of graffiti is, lettertekens en mens vormen in 1 beeld een dwingende combinatie.

Van Voorbijgaande Aard (40)

(Sommige) compactcamera's & regen: een niet zo gelukkige combinatie. Twee keren heb ik in de regen in Aken gefototografeerd. Beide keren hield mijn g9 er mee op. Batterij zo dood als een pier. Na een nieuwe batterij en een poosje in een droge warme omgeving werd de g9 weer een vriendje van me.
Moraal: Een onderwaterhuis?

Van Voorbijgaande Aard (37)

Er zijn foto's die men maakt, na min of meer bedacht te hebben, hoe het er uit moet gaan zien. Men stelt zich op, vlak achter een met affiches beplakte paal, en men wacht, & hoopt en nee, weet dat er wat gaat gebeuren, wat een te bewaren foto oplevert. Een bijna intieme gebeurtenis is het deel van de aandachtige kijker.
& Soms loopt men in een drukke straat & ziet een paraplu als een halve wereldbol voor zich. Men denkt niet, maar drukt af. Vervreemding valt ten deel aan de aandachtige kijker.
Het regende veel die dag, en er waren veel te veel mensen.

Parapluweer!

Vandaag foto's uit het negatiefarchief ingescand voor de tentoonstelling “ Weer of geen weer” van de Amsterdamse fotografenavond, die in november zal plaats vinden. De foto's van bijna 25 jaar geleden sloten perfect aan bij het sombere weer van vandaag.
