The former level railway crossing at the station. Was often closed for about half an hour every hour.

Regarding Iron Lines/Omtrent IJzeren Lijnen (2)

 1992. I am sitting in my new workspace annex darkroom next to a railway bridge over the a canal in Amsterdam East. A train thumps down the rails about every five minutes. The sound fascinates me. I grab my Nikon with the 20mm, put a low-sensitivity film in it, take a tripod, go outside and stroll along the railway embankment. At the end of the walk I take this picture. A new series is born: Iron Lines. This photo will be on display as a vintage print at the exhibition “Regarding Iron Lines” in Gallery WM in Amsterdam from 2024/1/19 to 2024/2/17. The Longest Night 11 years ago

(Often when I go out into my hometown Diemen, the somewhat sleepy suburb of Big City Amsterdam, I take my camera with me. I try to capture accidental beauty and sometimes unplanned alienation of the banal aspects of the everyday scenery. I started to do this from 2004, the year we came to live here,  at first in black and white, from 2006 in color.)

February 18.

Many railroads form barriers through Diemen, my home suburb of Amsterdam. Diemen 4.31 pm.

February 9.

A moving level crossing bar can sometimes be a strong poetic element in the photograph. Diemen, 17.15 pm.

Diemer Plek # 21

Diemen wordt doorkruist door een aantal spoorlijnen, waarbij er een ouderwetse gelijkvloerse overweg ligt, waar ruim 25 treinen per uur passeren. De enige overweg van die soort in de regio Amsterdam. Regelmatig zijn er dan ook ongelukken, ook omdat het station bij die overweg ligt. Ja ik weet het, men moet niet door het rode licht gaan.

Het is volgens mij echter niet meer van deze tijd op toch een drukke weg zo’n situatie voor te laten bestaan.

Misschien over 10 jaar komt er een tunnel….

De wolken en ik. We reisden een poosje samen. Daarna gingen we elk onze weg.
