Greetings from Diemen NL. #10

 No Dogs Allowed!

(Often when I go out into my hometown Diemen, the somewhat sleepy suburb of Big City Amsterdam, I take my camera with me. I try to capture accidental beauty and sometimes unplanned alienation of the banal aspects of the everyday scenery. I started to do this from 2004, the year we came to live here, at first in black and white, from 2006 in color.)

Diemer Plek # 73 (Sites from Diemen NL # 73)

Meanwhile Life goes on in that somewhat sleepy suburb of Amsterdam, Diemen. The place where I live and where sometimes a strange atmosphere arises. A mixture between endless rest and some kind of surrealism.

Meanwhile I can’t stop taking photographs of Diemen, the somewhat sleepy suburb of Amsterdam I live in.  There’s nothing I want to emphasize, I’m not looking for s special meaning of things in Diemen. It is not a documentary of the village either, but of course actual facts play their role. Every photograph has to have a meaning of itself. It could be called autonomous photography. The photograph has to speak for itself.

Diemer Plek # 66 (Sites from Diemen NL # 66)

What I want to accomplish in my pictures of my hometown Diemen, that somewhat sleepy suburb of Amsterdam, is the perfect image of banality.
My spots of Diemen are commonplaces, but by choosing a perfect point of view, and some postprocessing, I want to express the somewhat surrealistic atmosphere of some ordinary places.

Diemer Plek # 65 (Sites from Diemen NL # 65)

Some people wonder if I am still working on my series about Diemen, my home town. Well, I can reassure them, I am still working on it.
Gradually the way I am depicting this suburb is changing.  I used to make some kind of topographic images. Nowadays I tend to make photographs which I call controlled snapshots. They are like postcards, but with subjects which are unusual for postcards.
A funny thing about working a long time (6 years now) on Sites from Diemen is that not only my photographic vision changes, but also the town itself.  I captured spots which changed radically, or even disappeared.

Nieuw boek (new book)

Yes, the book 11/11 is ready! You can see it here.

As mentioned before every day has its own two pages: right a photographic image, left layout and some words. It has become a sort of diary of the month. The picture you see has been made on that specific day. Enjoy.

It’s something I want to do more: making photographs in which foreground mingles with background.
