A.D. 2018 #29.

1 of the things I did during this year (& during the last 2 months of 2017) was taking a photo between the two slopes of the freeways A1 and A9, a piece of ground between a motorway junction where only grass is growing. And some wild flowers. Every 2-3 weeks I went to 52.332323 ° North latitude,  5.004553 ° East longitude and stood on the same corner stone. At YouTube https://youtu.be/o3nNk9jIKFE you can watch a test series. In January I am planning to make a “Bijsterboekje” (Bijsterbooklet). Photographs: 52.332323 ° North latitude, 5.004553 ° East longitude, 4/18, 5.37 pm and 52.332323 ° North latitude 5.004553 °, East longitude, 7/27, 11.59 am. AD. 2018 is a selection from photographs I made during 2018.

Sometimes a photograph has a small secret. By watching some time longer, the secret often seems to be solved. Although? After having landed in San Francisco during the afternoon, coming from Amsterdam, I took this picture during the afternoon. Some jetlag…. Photograph: 8/28, 9.37 pm. Diemen is the Amsterdam suburb where our family lives for quite a few years now. In Diemen one can find the only one level railway crossing in the Amsterdam region. Source of irritation with about twenty trains every hour. But sometimes in the long afternoon light of December a railway crossing is just beautiful. And the photographer is doing some errands and has as always, a camera with him. Photograph: Diemen (NL), 12/13, 3.11 pm. A.D. 2018 is a selection from photographs I made during 2018

My hottest picture ever. 44°C or 111°F. Made in Furnace Creek, California, Death Valley. Wanted the experience of walking at that temperature. Exhibition: "Walls of Night Photography".

An ugly thing, like a storage fuel tank for the nearby powerplant in combination with ugly light of a natrium lamp. Seem to be from another planet at night. Now I use a tripod and a longer exposure time. A tripod sharpens the view, forms the last memory of the concept of the picture. Photo: Diemen (NL), 2009/03/15, 9.01pm

Exhibition: "Walls of Night Photography".

Walking at night on the almost deserted grounds of the Prater in Vienna. There is the technique of digital photography. One does not have to use a tripod or flash., which would only destroy the atmosphere of the situation. Photo: Vienna, 2018/04/27, 9.38pm.

Exhibition “Walls of Night Photography”

This photograph I shot in 1988. We are in Laugharne (Wales), for a long time the town where the poet Dylan Thomas lived. Reason for the picture was the poem “And Death Shall Have No Dominion”. I remember four minutes exposure time, walking around with a torch, and flashing the tombstone, which was not the one of DT. Yes boys and girls, using the reciprocity factor!

Exhibition Night Photography

There’s something strange about spots in the night. Everything that looks normal in daylight often becomes frightening, mysterious or magical in the dark.
Essentially the night is just a big black box in which all kinds of things exist. Things which are natural as well as things which are manmade. Sometimes these things become visible, mostly by artificial light. A feeling of disorientation arises. One knows there’s something out there, but it stays invisible. What’s waiting in the dark? In my pictures this atmosphere is captured. There’s also a distance from everyday life, calmness and concentration; moods which are often to be felt at night.

From The Archives

Some 35 years I took the above photograph. A man trying to reach the dry part of the beach by making a huge jump. He’s now forever floating above the edge of the sea. Sorting out my archive of negatives I found this flying man. I digitalize a selection from my archives. It is quite a job. One starts to realize that one made a lot of rubbish. But sometimes a hidden treasure is to be found. Often it is a feast of remembrance.
